Jack Andraka (center), a 15-year-old student from Maryland, came up with a paper sensor that detects pancreatic cancer 168 times faster than current tests. It’s also 90% accurate, 400 times more sensitive, and 26,000 times less expensive than today’s methods. In short: It’s a lot better.

Andraka was inspired to focus on pancreatic cancer because a friend’s brother was killed by the disease. “I became interested in early detection, did a ton of research, and came up with this idea,” he says.

Wedding Brawl of the Day: Multiple people — including the groom’s mother! — were arrested this past weekend in a wedding brawl that started when the groom’s brothers were cut off at the bar. The Boston Herald‘s Jessica Heslam recounts the he said, she-said mayhem:

This service slight somehow incensed [groom Anthony] Delorio-Weiner, 25, who punched a wall and began tearing apart the coatroom after someone from the bride’s side of the family told him to calm down.

When the bride’s brother approached Delorio-Weiner, the groom punched him and the pair were soon tussling on the floor, police say.

[Mother of the groom] Darlene [Delorio]‘s version of the story is a bit different. It was all about disrespect, she said. According to her, the whole kerfuffle began when the bride’s mother began yelling at Darlene’s 70-year-old mother and waving her finger in her face.

Darlene insists she was only defending her mom and her family’s good name. How could that be assault? As the fighting escalated, Darlene claims she went to leave but was insulted by her ex-boyfriend’s galpal, who told her she was no lady.

The couple are (hopefully) patching things up on their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. “They’re in love,” Delorio said. “They’re doing everything in their power to make it work.”

Window Display of the Day: Jacqueline Traide, a 24-year-old performance artist, recently volunteered for a starring role she won’t soon forget: 10 hours of torture — cosmetics testing — in a Lush Cosmetics window display. The shocking performance, during which thousands of London passersby witnessed Jacqueline being roughly manhandled and administered to by a “lab technician,” was meant to draw attention to the pain and cruelty inflicted on animals during lab tests for beauty products.

Dressed in nothing but a flesh-colored body stocking, Jacqueline and her counterpartre-enacted widely used tests. She was given injections and had her skin abraded and smothered in lotions and potions, then endured eye irritants and having a strip of her hair shaved off on one of Britain’s busiest streets.

“I hope it will plant the seed of a new awareness in people to really start thinking about what they go out and buy and what goes into producing it,” Jacqueline said.
